Feedback From the Pros at the 2020 NAHB International Builders Show
What’s New in Home Design?
We recently made the annual trip down to Las Vegas to attend the NAHB International Builders Show (IBS) and met with a number of vendors from across the building industry. From appliances to insulation, plumbing fixtures to flooring, IBS is jam-packed with the latest and greatest in the home design and remodeling marketplace.
Talking Faucets with Kohler Kitchen & Bath
Our first stop at IBS was the Kohler exhibit. This immersive display spanned multiple showrooms highlighting dozens of different appliances, fixtures, and other products ranging from simple towel bars and lighted mirrors to their own line of home generators.
After exploring the Kohler display, we met with their Product Manager for Decorative Products, Color, Surfaces, and Suites. An expert in new product development and a master of design aesthetic, our guide walked us through the Kohler collection, pointing out some of the features, forms, and options that have been trending over the past few months.
The Kohler exhibit features a number of unique products, including their selection of Sunfield™ Lighted Mirrors.
Design Perspective – Contemporary American Style
While browsing through the various faucets on display, our guide pointed to a few design traits and described the forms that were most popular in various different regions. While most contemporary designs are minimalist and simple in nature, American trends have gravitated to rounded and sleek designs, contrasting sharply with the more angular and sharper European contemporary aesthetic.
Contemporary American style favors simple rounded designs like Kohler’s Components™ line of faucets.
Customizable Colors and Finishes
Another trend that has recently taken off involves the end user’s ability to customize their fixtures, allowing homeowners to choose from a wide assortment of finishes, unique coloration, and a selection of stone accents for faucet handles. Matte or brushed finishes have gained in popularity as of late, although many glossy models are still available for purchase.
Matte black plumbing fixtures have become increasingly popular, as black and white bathroom designs continue to be on the rise. Brushed gold finishes have also come into vogue, showcased by a number of Kohler products featuring an understated industrial design.
It’s clear that less is more when it comes to form and function in the modern kitchen and bath, as is evident by the minimalist design aesthetic of the current Kohler product line.
Kohler plumbing fixtures are available in a wide assortment of colors, finishes, and styles.
